Suit Buying 101: Modern Fit vs. Traditional
BlogOne of the sayings in advertising is “There are no new ideas. They are just recycled.”
The same principal can be said for Men’s fashion. The look you see today has been done before in some manner and, rest assured, will be done again as it comes full circle. This doesn’t mean the powdered wigs and ruffled shirts are coming back into style, but with every generation, our look slowly transforms into a slightly different variation.
A great example of coming full circle is the emergence of the “modern fit” suit. This style features a slimmer silhouette that many will recognize from the late 50’s and early 60’s. Humphrey Bogart and the Rat Pack-Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Peter Lawford- are some of the best examples of how to wear this suit style with class.
The coat is slimmer fitting with a higher button stance and a narrow lapel. Generally, it’s worn a little bit shorter than other coats. The pants are also slim and have a flat front, narrow legs and no cuff or break at the bottom.
The recent popularity of the hit television show Mad Men (A sitcom following the lives of advertising executives in the 60’s where all men wore dark fitted suits and skinny ties) may be part of the resurrection of this particular style. It’s not unusual for hit series or blockbuster movies to affect styles and trends. It may just be a fad but the industry is taking it very seriously.
Today’s modern fit suit appeals to a range of wearers- from the younger generation to the older suit wearers that want to emphasize their fit condition.
This isn’t a look for everyone. Stop in at a merchant like Shelton Clothiers in Downtown Memphis and talk to the staff. Their expertise will put you in a suit that looks like it was made just for you. Try a few things on and see what works. Find your style.
Cleaning and Caring for Your Suits
BlogA good suit can be a great-looking, lifelong part of your wardrobe if cared for properly. Taking a few extra steps in the cleaning and care of your suits can go a long way in maintaining their look, feel and fit.
Rarely, if ever, take your suits to the dry cleaners. A good suit will have natural oils in the fibers of the wool, and cleaning chemicals and high temperature drying can cause damage to the fabric over time. Regular dry cleaning of your suit can hurt the suit’s construction, and cause the suit to become stiff and less supple.
The same can be said about over pressing a suit. Too much pressing or ironing will damage the fibers of the fabric, causing your suits to lose their look and feel. You can tell that a suit has been over pressed when it appears shiny or glossy.
The best alternative to dry cleaning is to simply brush your suits regularly. Acquire a clothes brush, and gently brush your suits before hanging them away. A brush is generally better than adhesive lint rollers that often leave behind bits of glue on the fabric.
A great investment for keeping your suits wrinkle free is a hand steamer. A steamer is easy to use, and will knock out the wrinkles without damaging the suit’s fabric. Steaming your suits every once and a while will maintain a like-new shape and look.
Finally, if you’re planning to store your suit for a long period of time, keep it in a breathable, cloth bag. Suits need moisture to maintain their fit and construction but trapped moisture will mold. In a cloth bag, your suits will be able to breath, and won’t be damaged over time due to dryness or mold.

Suit Buying 101: Getting the Right Fit
BlogOne of the first steps in buying a suit is finding the right fit. Here are a few things to remember when looking for a suit that will fit comfortably and look great.
Remember that suit jackets come sized based on the measurement of the chest. A simple measurement around the thickest part of your chest will get you the right size most of the time. If you’re familiar with terms measuring jacket length like short, regular or long, but don’t know which you need; take a look at this easy guide.
Using these guidelines for sizing, you should be able to find a suit on the rack that will work for you. But, if you’re an uncommon fit or if you want something made for your fit, you may want to consider getting a tailored suit.
If you want a suit personally sized for you, Shelton Clothiers’ Downtown Memphis location offers in house, expert tailoring. That means that we can offer you personal service in finding a quality suit that will fit great and look even better.
Their are generally two types of tailored suits: Made to Measure and Full Custom.
Made to measure means that we already have the materials and pattern ready to go, and we can construct your suit based on your size and measurement. This is the more common method we use when tailoring a suit.
A full custom suit is for a customer that either has an extremely irregular fit or wants something that’s completely unique to them. Full custom means that your suit will be built from the ground up and will be one-of-a-kind. However, a full custom suit will have a much higher price tag and take longer to make.
Remember that personalized fitting is a process. It’s common to have a second fitting if we don’t get it just right. If you’re a difficult fit, patience pays off. After your first custom suit is right, additional garments will be much easier to make.
Men’s Clothing Guide: How to Match a Shirt and Tie
BlogA good combination of a shirt and tie can make a suit or other outfit come alive, but the wrong combination can make your look fall flat. Next time you’re shopping for men’s clothes, keeps these tips in mind when creating the perfect pairing of a shirt and tie.
When shopping for a new tie, always keep your current wardrobe in mind. Select ties that will easily coordinate with shirts and suits that you already own. If you find a tie that you think wouldn’t fit in with your current clothing, pick up a few new pieces to go along with it.
Remember, the easiest shirt color to match a tie with is white. The standard white shirt will go with just about any tie. If you want to take it a step further, find a tie that has a splash of white in the design to make the other colors in your tie really stand out.
The most important rule to keep in mind when matching a shirt and tie is contrast. The pattern and colors of your shirt and tie shouldn’t match. Try a striped tie with a solid shirt, or the other way around.
The key to matching a busy shirt is base color. If you have a shirt with detailed patterns and varying colors, find it’s dominant color and look for a tie that matches.
Additionally, you should always focus on complimenting to color. For instance, a yellow shirt should been worn with a tie that has a splash of yellow.
Most importantly, matching a tie and shirt should be a process in discovering what you like and what works for you. Keep these rules in mind, but experiment to find the right style that fits your taste and personality. With a wide selection of both men’s shirts and ties, Shelton Clothiers on Main Street in Downtown Memphis can help you find a look that’s right for you.
Mo’s Bows
BlogDesigner: Mo's Bows
Designers come from near and far. I have met many after 35 years in the men’s clothing business. Some of them right here in Memphis. Most of them are very talented and have been trained and educated in the fashion industry for years. however, there are a few that just take to it naturally. I once met a tailor/designer here in Memphis that could do anything because no one ever told him he couldn’t. He was in his early 20’s when I met him and was far more talented than some of the old timers I have worked with. The simple alterations I needed done were soon boring him and he has moved on to full design work and will someday be famous if he stays with his passion.
I have recently encountered another young man here in Memphis who is a natural. His name is Moziah Bridges, and he designs and make his own bow ties. What is unusual for this young man is that he is 10 years old. He already knows what he wants to do in life, design. If you ask Mo why he makes bow ties he will tell you “I like to dress up”. When he was 9 he told his mother he wanted a bow tie. They went to the men’s suit department of a local store and looked through the collection. Mo did not like what he saw. His grandmother use to sew and had lots of fabric. Together they taught themselves how to make a bow tie from some colors that Mo liked. A designer was born!
Today, Mo stays busy with school, acting (he’s shy but also a ham), singing and dancing and making bow ties. Another local Memphis talent that, if he stays with his passion, will go far one day. He sells his bow tie here at Shelton Clothiers and at various functions and festivals in the community.
